F-star develops therapeutic bispecific antibodies using its Modular Antibody Technology, directed at improving the treatment of serious diseases, with a focus on immuno-oncology. We are entering an exciting period of the Company’s development and have a new opportunity for a Financial Controller to take ownership over accounting and auditor liaison, internal reporting and controls environment for the F-star family of companies. The role will report to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and will be working in conjunction with the Financial, Planning & Analysis Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

Monthly / Quarterly Reporting:

  • Manage / prepare monthly management accounts for five separate legal entities, including variance analysis of operating results and financial position
  • Devise and monitor KPIs that properly reflect the operation of the business
  • Other responsibilities include preparing/reviewing the group consolidation, finance commentary, FX analysis
  • Prepare updates of accounting standard changes, review policies, documentation and compliance

External Audit and Third-Party Reporting:

  • Full ownership for delivery of the group and company IFRS annual financial statements
  • Managing full annual audit process – interim planning, issues identification and resolution
  • Responsible for tax compliance and R&D tax credit recoveries for all companies providing input for structuring strategies
  • Ongoing collaboration with external auditors and tax advisors to ensure full compliance with all relevant accounting standards and regulations
  • Assisting CFO with company secretarial duties: statutory company returns and accounts filing requirements
  • Equity scheme IFRS accounting, maintenance of share option registers, scheme rules, HMRC filings

Internal Control Environment:

  • Establish and implement appropriate internal financial reporting systems and controls to comply with best practice
  • Update and improve accounting and budgeting systems

Other Responsibilities:

  • Preparing Audit Committee packs and papers
  • Assisting the CFO in preparing ad-hoc reports to senior executives and board members.
  • Assisting the CFO in preparing for financing rounds
  • Maintaining finance and corporate sections of company data room
  • Review commercial, finance aspects of legal / M&A contracts

Key Requirements:

We would like to hear from you if you have the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or master's degree in accounting, business, economics, finance, or a related field; several years of experience in a business or finance environment; management experience
  • ACA Qualified, ideally in a Big 4 practice having attained manager level
  • Several years of experience, including supervisory responsibility in a similar controller role. Experience in both a large corporate environment and SME environment would be advantageous.
  • High level of technical IFRS expertise
  • US GAAP reporting and VC backed Biotech and / or pharma  experience advantageous
  • Ability to see the big picture while focusing on the process and procedures necessary to produce deliverables.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity; proven track record of managing competing priorities and achieving deadlines
  • Self-starter who can work independently
  • Flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intermediate to advanced applications software expertise (Excel and accounting software).
  • Familiarity with financial due diligence / financial and commercial aspects of legal / M&A transactions

F-star develops therapeutic bispecific antibodies using its Modular Antibody Technology, directed at improving the treatment of serious diseases, with a focus on immuno-oncology. We are looking for an exceptional Research Associate to play a key role in the continuous advancement of our immuno-oncology platform and contribute to drug discovery and development. You will be largely lab-based, working under the supervision of a senior scientist within the Protein Sciences group, responsible for protein characterisation, formulation and method development to support development of bispecific mAb2 molecules.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop, validate and perform a variety of analytical methods to characterise mAbs, bispecific mAb2, antigens & antibody fragments
  • Demonstrate interpretation of data to draw results driven conclusions and influence product development
  • Utilise understanding of protein chemistry and biopharmaceutical development to make proactive recommendations

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant industry experience in characterisation of recombinant bio therapeutics
  • Experience in early stage developability assessment of pre-candidate proteins
  • Experience in analytical and biophysical characterisation (including protein formulation & stability, post-translational modifications and product characterisation)
  • Experience in analytical and preparative HPLC (HIC, IEX, SEC), light scattering (MALLS & DLS), DSC and capillary electrophoresis
  • Theoretical and practical scientific/technical knowledge for the characterisation and testing of recombinant protein biotherapeutics ideally gained in an industrial environment or experienced academic candidates
  • Some knowledge of protein mass spectrometry would be beneficial

We are looking for an exceptional senior scientist to play a key role in the continuous advancement of our immune-oncology platform and contribute to drug discovery and development. Working within the Protein Sciences group, you will take the lead role for F-star in the development and delivery of analytical capabilities to support our technology platform and mAb2 bispecific pipeline.  Analytical capabilities are required to deliver protein engineering, research grade production and process development activities with a key focus on protein characterisation, formulation and developability assessments

Key responsibilities:

  • Development and delivery of analytical methods for characterisation of F-star mAb2 pipeline with a key focus on protein aggregation, formulation, primary structure determination, post-translational modification characterisation and protein structure prediction
  • Formulation, developability assessment and characterisation of mAb2 bispecific antibodies
  • Analytical leadership for F-star development programmes from early development through to GMP manufacture
  • Leadership of a small team within Protein Sciences 
  • Representation of Protein Sciences on mAb2 development programmes
  • Critical interpretation of data to draw results driven conclusions and define project progression

Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • PhD or equivalent relevant experience, ideally gained in an industrial environment although consideration will be given to industrially relevant academic experience.
  • Extensive experience and breadth of knowledge in analytical and biophysical characterisation of recombinant biotherapeutics for CMC development. (e.g. formulation, protein aggregation, protein stability and post-translational modifications including glycosylation).
  • Experience in early stage developability assessment of therapeutic proteins and development lifecycle for recombinant protein therapeutics
  • Demonstrated management and leadership of scientific teams for project and technology development
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and applying the following techniques: UHPLC (SEC, RP, IEX), Mass Spectrometry (including MS/MS peptide mapping of protein therapeutics), dynamic and static light scattering, capillary electrophoresis.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of protein engineering and sequence analysis
  • Knowledge and experiences in biophysical methods for characterisation of protein conformation (DSC, FT-IR, CD)
  • Knowledge of research scale and GMP scale production processes as applied to CMC development
